Steel wire rope - Vocabulary

This standard applies to terminology commonly used in steel wire rope products and related standards. The terms defined herein shall be used when formulating or revising steel wire rope product standards and in practical applications.
This standard adopts the International Standard ISO 17893:2004, *Steel wire ropes - Vocabulary, designation and classification*, with modifications.
In certain steel wire rope constructions, the wires and strand layers are arranged to minimize torque or rotation. For example, in multi-strand ropes composed of strands with identical construction, or in single-layer strand ropes laid around an independent wire rope core (IWRC), if the lay directions of the wires and strand layers are opposed, the rope exhibits low torsional stress, resulting in non-rotating or low-rotating characteristics.
1. Phosphated steel wire rope (Chinese patent): The phosphating coating weight on the wire is 3–60 g/m². After phosphating and prior to stranding, the wire undergoes no further cold-drawing; it is directly stranded into strands, cores, and the finished rope.
2. Galvanized steel wire rope: Produced via hot-dip galvanizing or electro-galvanizing; a thicker zinc coating provides superior corrosion resistance.
3. Plastic-coated steel wire rope: A plastic coating of a specific thickness-such as polyethylene, polypropylene, or polyurethane-is applied to the outer surface of the rope or its strands.
4. Bright (uncoated) steel wire rope: Produced from wire rod that has undergone heat treatment and surface preparation followed by cold drawing (Note: the phosphating film formed during pretreatment is gradually worn off by intense friction with the drawing die during the cold-drawing process). The wire undergoes no further surface treatment before being directly stranded into strands, cores, and the finished rope. Production began internationally in 1834; in China, production commenced in 1939 at the Tianjin No. 1 Steel Wire Rope Factory.
